Silicosis is the most common occupational lung disease. This is an incurable disease that can even lead to death. For this reason it is necessary to prevent it by acquiring an adequate air purification system able to respect the environment and protect the health of the worker.

Silicosis is caused by the Breathable Crystalline Silica, a micro particles powder that is created during the cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling and crushing of stones, rocks, cement, bricks and mortar . Breathable Crystalline Silica can also cause other diseases such as:

  • lung cancer,
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),
  • Kidney diseases.

Prevent silicosis, protecting environment

Since 1985 we have been producing high quality plants for dust suppression and water purification. Our experience in the sector allows us to guarantee the best safety standards. Particularly we have created three products that can combat the silicosis-causing powders:

Air Box

Dust collector with water technology ; thanks to its versatility, it is used in different processes with dry and water tools.

Air Dry

Suction cabin with dry technology, equipped with hydro and oil-repellent filtration sleeves for a greater lifetime.

Air Quattro

Bench with dry technology that exploits the same filtration system as the AIR DRY suction cabin : with hydro and oil-repellent filtration sleeves

Our products, both in the European and American markets, comply with the most recent regulations on the protection of workers’ health, which have set more restrictive limits for the exposure to Breathable Silica Crystalline dust.

As far as the European Union, please click here to consult the text of the European directive no. 2017/2398; this last amendment the directive 2004/37/CE on the protection of workers against the risks due to an exposure to carcinogens or mutagens during work. The Member States have to comply with this Directive within January 17th, 2010.

In the United States, on the other hand, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued a regulation that provides for two distinct standards : one for the general and maritime industry ( which therefore also concerns employees in stone processing companies) and one for the building industry ( which mainly concerns those workers on the construction site)

The regulation entered into force on June 23rd, 2016. Click here to find more information.

Silicosis emergency in Andalusia

There is a true silicosis emergency in Andalusia, Spain, with more than 300 certified cases from 2009 to 2018, as recently referred by the Spanish Focus Piedra website ( The largest number of cases of this lung disease was in provinces of Cadiz, Huelva and Almeria, and among the major causes of the increase in this job-related disease typical of extraction/mining work was processing quartz agglomerates to make bathroom and kitchen counter tops. This was stated by Jesus Aguirre, Health Councilor for the Andalusia Parliament, in a hearing with the parliament’s commission.

To deal with the problem, the Andalusia parliament is promoting the “PISA” ( Programa Integral de Silicosis de Andalusia) plan that aims to deal with this disease that mainly involves workers in small Spanish stone businesses. “PISA” promoters hope to enact the program’s measures nationwide (Ref. MARMO MACCHINE INTERNATIONAL 109 July- August 2019 edition).

Finally, remember that in order to get a healthy workplace, in addition to good machinery, adequate training , careful supervision and continuous monitoring of emissions are necessary.
